Further west, near Arnissa, stands Lake Vegoritida, one of the deepest and most picturesque lakes in Greece. Just a few kilometers away lies Loutraki (Pozar), home to the famous Pozar Thermal Baths, one of Greece’s most popular year-round spa destinations. Warm mineral waters flow from the mountain at a constant temperature of 37°C, forming small waterfalls and natural pools amid lush greenery.

Giannitsa, the largest city in the prefecture, serves as its commercial and agricultural hub. While today it is a bustling modern town, Giannitsa also holds echoes of its Ottoman past, visible in the Clock Tower and the Gazi Evrenos Mausoleum, reminders of the city’s multicultural history.

The Ancient City of Pella – Birthplace of Alexander the Great

A few kilometers from Giannitsa, between the villages of Palia and Nea Pella, lie the magnificent ruins of Ancient Pella, once the capital of the Macedonian Kingdom. It was here, under King Archelaos (413–399 B.C.), that Pella flourished as the political, economic, and cultural center of Macedonia. Archelaos built an impressive palace complex and invited the renowned painter Zeuxis to decorate it, marking the city’s rise to prominence.

Both Philip II and Alexander the Great spent part of their lives here, shaping the destiny of the ancient world. By the 4th century B.C., Pella had become one of the most important cities in the Greek world, admired for its urban planning, elegant public spaces, and cultural vitality.

Today, archaeological excavations have revealed the palace ruins, sanctuaries of Aphrodite, Demeter, and Cybele, a marketplace (agora), and residential houses adorned with exquisite mosaic floors. These mosaics, depicting mythological scenes such as the Hunt of the Lion and Dionysus riding a panther, are among the finest examples of ancient Greek art. Many of them can be admired in the Archaeological Museum of Pella, which offers a fascinating journey into Macedonia’s golden age.

Mount Kaimaktsalan and Outdoor Adventures

For adventure seekers, Mount Kaimaktsalan (Voras), rising to 2,524 meters, offers breathtaking alpine scenery and outdoor activities year-round. In winter, the Kaimaktsalan Ski Resort attracts skiers and snowboarders from all over Greece, while in summer, hikers and mountain bikers explore trails that pass through forests, streams, and highland meadows. At the summit, the Prophet Elias Chapel stands as a peaceful monument overlooking Greece and North Macedonia — one of the most striking panoramic views in the Balkans.
